God has always called young people to service. The scriptures are filled with inspiring stories about the young being called by name to accomplish a task given to them by God.

The primary responsibility of altar servers is to assist the priest at Mass on weekends, but servers also assist on some holy days, holidays, as well as at weddings and funerals. In this role, you will carry the cross and candles in the procession and assist the presider throughout the worship service. Assistance at the altar by servers represents a long liturgical tradition. These servers enhance the quality of the celebration for the whole gathered assembly by taking part in processions and ensuring that all items required for the celebration are available at the appropriate moments.

It is important that altar servers have an enthusiasm for public prayer and they actively participate in the liturgy as they listen, sing, and pray with the entire assembly.

HOW DOES ONE BECOME AN ALTAR SERVER?

At St. Simon, all children who have celebrated their First Communion and are in the 5th grade or higher may sign up to receive Altar Server training. Training sessions are held twice a month, on the second Tuesday at 3:15 pm and on the fourth Sunday after the 9:00 am Mass in the church.
