Order of Christian Initiation (OCIA) Becoming a Catholic

OCIA is designed for those who are considering joining the Catholic Church through celebrating the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The process welcomes adults who have never been baptized and those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition.

OCIA at St. Simon is a program of prayer, conversation, learning and faith sharing. In addition to the sessions, participants will be encouraged to engage in various faith and service opportunities of our parish family. We welcome you to join us!

OCIA: Walking with Those Preparing for Full Initiation

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is not simply a yearly program but a journey of faith. Individuals move forward at a pace that reflects their own spiritual growth and readiness. When they are prepared, they celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation, sometimes at the upcoming Easter Vigil, and sometimes in a future year.

Catechumens

A catechumen is a person who has never been baptized and is preparing to receive Baptism in the Catholic Church. Through study, prayer, and participation in parish life, catechumens grow in their relationship with Christ and their understanding of the faith.

The Elect

After a period of formation, catechumens are formally chosen by the Church at the Rite of Election and are then called the Elect. When ready, they will receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Candidates for Full Communion

These are baptized Christians from other Christian traditions who are now preparing to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Because their baptism is already recognized, they will make a profession of faith and receive Confirmation and Eucharist when they are ready.

Adult Confirmation Candidates

These are baptized Catholics who have already received First Eucharist but were never confirmed. They are completing their Sacraments of Initiation and will receive Confirmation.

OCIA for Teens-Elect

Our teen Elect are young people who are also preparing for Baptism and the other Sacraments of Initiation at Easter. Like the adult Elect, they are responding to God’s call in a courageous and beautiful way.

HOW DOES ONE JOIN OCIA?

If you are interested in participating in the OCIA process, or if you are a fully initiated Catholic who would like to sponsor an adult in the RCIA process, please contact Fr. Thanh Ho email: thanhho@stsimon.org
