A Week of Service, Connection, and Transformation in Tijuana
This past week, a group of volunteers joined our ministry team on an unforgettable mission trip to the outskirts of Tijuana, Mexico. In just seven days, lives were changed—both among those we served and those who came to serve.
Each day was thoughtfully planned to immerse our travelers into the heart of the local community. We visited service centers and immigration sites, gaining insight into the challenges faced by many families living near the border. We also spent time reconnecting with families for whom we’ve built homes in the past—powerful moments that reminded us of the long-term impact these missions have.
One of the highlights of the week was our vibrant Children’s Day Camp. Dozens of children came each day to enjoy songs, crafts, games, and the joy of being celebrated. This year we added a photo booth to the activities and the children left camp with beautiful photo memories of their experience with us. Their energy and smiles were contagious, and it was a privilege to pour love and attention into their lives, even for a few hours a day.
The heart of our week was the construction of three new homes for three incredible families. Working side by side with local partners and the families themselves, we watched as bare ground transformed into safe, dignified, multi-generational shelter. As well as a working bathroom with hot water, this year we included kitchenettes with a stove and refrigerator, appliances that most people in the area will never be able to own. The gratitude and warmth we received from the community was overwhelming. Though they have little in material terms, the people of Tijuana gave generously of their time, labor, and spirit. Their resilience and hospitality are a testament to the strength of faith and family.
This mission week reminded all of us that service is not about what we bring, but about what we are willing to learn. We return home not just with memories, but with deeper compassion, a broader perspective, and a renewed commitment to loving others as Christ has loved us.
Thank you to all who made this week possible—through your prayers, donations, and encouragement. Your support built more than homes. It built bridges of hope and friendship that will last far beyond this trip.
We warmly invite you to join the annual BASICS Tijuana Ministry mission trip, offered by our parish. This inspiring journey is a powerful way to live out your faith in service to others. You’ll be part of a dedicated group of volunteers who have generously shared their time and talents—and in return, experienced the deep joy of helping to build God’s kingdom.
Below, you’ll find reflections from some of this year’s participants who took a moment to share how this mission touched their hearts and transformed their faith.
“Our recent mission trip to Tijuana was more than a construction project—it was a profound encounter with Christ himself. Over the course of the week, we experienced His presence through peace, joy, hope and love. We felt peace during Benediction, as we sang and prayed together before the Blessed Sacrament. Joy radiated from the children at the camp, and from the patients at the AIDS/TB clinic during our visit. Hope was renewed for the families as they received the keys to their new homes. And love was shared in abundance as we grew in friendship and community—through meals, conversations, play, and labor. I warmly encourage you to consider joining this mission next year if you can. It will bless your life in ways you can’t imagine. “ —Joanne Chao
“My trip down to Tijuana this year with the BASICS team was an immersive and joyous experience. My favorite memory was at the evening talent show with the local youth. During their performance, they invited us on stage to learn dances with them. In that moment, I felt so much joy and welcoming as we celebrated our time together. As we danced and laughed side by side with one another, no one felt like strangers.” —Dominic Chao
“Even though it was only my second year in Tijuana, I can confidently say that the community—both the travelling team and the local residents—is my favorite part of the entire experience. It’s amazing how quickly everyone bonds and how incredibly inviting and inclusive both communities are with one another. I’ve met people now who are like my second family, and I’m constantly inspired by the unique stories and rich, complex lives of those I meet, from recovering drug addicts to master carpenters. If I had to sum up the TJ community in 3 words, it would be positive, welcoming and energetic. This trip is truly a special experience, filled with laughter, unforgettable stories and even a few heartfelt tears.” —Marissa Chao
“I want to thank each and every one of you for your wonderful spirit of hospitality, collaboration, and good humor. May our Lord Jesus and our Blessed Mother continue to bless you and continue to animate your joyful ministry of hope, justice, and peace. It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with you.” — Blessings from Olga and Susana
“Thank you everyone for letting Emilia and I share in this amazing experience. My heart is so full of gratitude to all of you. What a difference we have made in the lives of these three families, and it only happened because of the community we built together. It has been a privilege to serve with all of you and Emilia and I look forward to going again next year. God bless all of you.” – Ana Bonilla
God bless,
