In today’s Gospel, we hear John the Baptist proclaiming “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 3:3). At first glance, the word “repentance” might stir images of regret or remorse, but there is a deeper, richer meaning to uncover here. The Greek word used in the original text is metanoia, which carries a profound invitation to transformation.
Metanoia is often translated as “repentance,” but it goes far beyond simply feeling sorry for our sins. It means a complete change of mind and heart—a reorientation of our entire being toward God. It is a call to step out of the narrow confines of our own perspective and see the world through God’s eyes. It’s not just about turning away from sin; it’s about turning toward the fullness of life God offers us in Christ.
This Advent season, as we prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus, we are called to embrace a metanoia mindset. Advent invites us to reflect on the ways God is already at work in our lives and to remain open to the surprising and transformative ways He may be calling us closer to Him. It is a time to pause, listen, and allow our hearts to be softened by His grace.
John the Baptist’s cry to “prepare the way of the Lord” is not merely about external actions but an inward readiness to let Christ enter and reshape our hearts. This preparation requires us to let go of what holds us back—our distractions, our fears, and even our certainties—and to trust in God’s ongoing work in our lives.
During these weeks of Advent, consider taking time to reflect on these questions:
- Where is God inviting me to experience metanoia?
- What areas of my life need to be reoriented toward Him?
- How can I prepare my heart to welcome Christ anew this Christmas?
As we reflect on this call to metanoia, let’s also come together as a parish community to celebrate the joy and hope of the season. Tonight, Saturday, December 7th, join us for a wonderful evening of community, music, and joy as we prepare our hearts for Christmas! Immediately following the 5:00 pm Mass, we will gather for our outdoor tree lighting ceremony with beautiful Christmas lights and scenes provided by the Rivera family. Following this festive beginning, we will host an amazing Christmas Concert, “Hope for the Holidays,” featuring the talented John Angotti, Meredith Augustin, their incredible band, and our children’s choir. Please bring your family and friends to share in the joy.
We had a beautiful start to our Advent retreat series Be Still and Hopeful! In our first session, we focused on learning how to talk with God. A highlight of the evening was discovering how drawing and painting can be powerful ways to express our emotions and feelings to God. This creative exercise engages the right side of our brain, which is associated with intuition, creativity, and emotional expression—offering a unique and profound way to pray.
I invite you to our second session, where we will explore how to listen to God. Together, we’ll use the ancient practice of audio divina, a prayerful encounter with God through music and scripture. Come and discover how to use sacred texts and music to hear God’s voice in your heart and your life. Join us this Tuesday at 7:00 pm for an evening of prayer, reflection, and deeper connection with God. Learn how to listen to God and discern God’s will in our lives.
Let us walk together in this sacred season of anticipation, open to the ways God is drawing us deeper into His love. May this Advent be a time of metanoia for each of us—a time to let God transform our hearts and minds as we await the coming of Christ, who makes all things new.
God Bless,
Fr. Brendan
